Dublin Councillor calls for civic reception for Yes Equality team

Fine Gael Councillor Noel Rock is calling on Dublin City Council to host a civic reception at City Hall for those involved in the Yes Equality team in Dublin.

“My party colleague in Cork, Councillor John Buttimer, has proposed this idea for his own area and I think this sentiment of goodwill could be extended to Dublin,” Councillor Rock stated.

“So many people associated with the Yes Equality campaign worked tirelessly on the ground during a long referendum campaign to engage with the people and generate debate. The people have spoken and supported marriage equality, the result of which was greeted with a huge feeling of pride, love and peace at the weekend, as was seen around the globe in Dublin Castle. Unfortunately, a great many of those involved weren’t able to make it into Dublin Castle, and I think it’s only right that we acknowledge their efforts,” he continued.

“Dublin City Council has debated and almost unanimously approved a motion in support of same sex marriage, so I think a cross-party event to thank those who campaigned for it would be both appropriate and welcome. These people gave up weeks of their lives, many of them taking time off work and campaigning for the first time in their lives, and I think it would be a nice gesture from the Council to show our appreciation for those who engaged in civic activity and helped bring about record turnouts in Dublin,” he added.
