Temporarily standing aside is ludicrous‘, says TD.

Fine Gael TD for Dublin North West, Noel Rock has this evening (Wednesday) called for Pat Hickey to resign permanently from the Olympic Council of Ireland. Speaking on the matter, Deputy Rock said: “A temporary stepping down is ludicrous. Given the clear disrepute that he has now dragged the OCI into, the ongoing governance issues raised and his inability to engage in any external scrutiny, Mr. Hickey’s position is clearly no longer tenable. And that isn’t temporary”.

Deputy Rock continued: “After today’s arrest, I believe Mr. Hickey needs to permanently and immediately resign as President of the Olympic Council of Ireland and the European Olympic Committees, and he must resign from his role as an executive member of the International Olympic Committee,”

“Today’s events have brought great embarrassment to our country, not just in the world of sport, but on a much wider scale. There are a number of questions that need to be answered by the OCI including, who is in charge of the organisation now that Mr. Hickey is under arrest in Rio? A temporary stepping down is absurd” said Deputy Rock.

“We need a full external inquiry to be established by Minister Ross as soon as is practicable. There are a great many questions to be answered on behalf of the Irish taxpayer and, if compliance from the OCI with any investigation cannot be guaranteed, then we should not rule out a full review of the taxpayer funding which they receive from Sport Ireland. However, in the interim, it is quite clear that Mr. Hickey has cast a dark cloud over these games and over the Olympics in Ireland and for the good of the organisation, he should permanently step down with immediate effect”, concluded Deputy Rock.
